Frequently asked questions

Every person who supervises CDL drivers for an FMCSA-regulated employer must complete this training before making reasonable suspicion decisions: supervisors, dispatchers, safety managers, company officials, owner-operators and small fleets. Transit employers under FTA rules (49 CFR Part 655) have a similar requirement and should check that the course fits their program.

49 CFR 382.603 requires at least 60 minutes on alcohol misuse and at least 60 more minutes on controlled substances use; the course has two full 60-minute modules, and Moodle records each page and the time in the course. The employer must still give each supervisor its written drug and alcohol policy and its procedures: who the designated employer representative is, which collection site it uses and how a driver is taken to testing. Keep the certificate with your training records. This course is not a DOT approval or certification.

No. The rule requires the training one time; refresher training is not required. The certificate has no expiry date.

Online, at the supervisor's own pace, on a computer or a phone. The course includes a Reasonable Suspicion Observation Checklist (English and Spanish) for the written record required by 49 CFR 382.307(f).
